The difference between Lucy’s tennis at the beginning of the season vs the end was drastic and it all came down to confidence and mental toughness.

I was in a leadership program and was attending the training and on this specific day, it was diet and sports stuff. I was having some major issues with my job, (supervisor to be exact) I also had a broken leg which stopped me from being able to run my MCM marathon in 2017. I was extremely bummed from all the events that were happening. Running has been my escape from reality and I was on the verge of quitting. I did not feel like running was an option anymore. Dr. Detling provided a very minute part of her training and it hit me. It hit me hard. I realized I was feeling sorry for myself and with her teaching and instructing, immediately after I felt motivated to live again, to run again, and most of all to remember why I ran. It was a long healing process both mentally and physically but I remember what she always tells me, “Keep running!” Simple words, yes, but so powerful. I ran my MCM in 2018 with a 3:55 finish and to date, I still owe Dr. Detling with helping my mind get with my heart and body. Her book has helped many friends of mine and I continue to be resilient through the hardest of feats.

I started working with HeadStrong many years ago, but started to become more consistent in the last two years. My sport of ski jumping is very technical, and I believe the mental strength is what divides the goods from the greats. My main focus has been my confidence and trust in myself and the training process. I have undergone many injuries and surgeries, and I struggle to trust my body through the healing process. For a sport like ski jumping, you can have ZERO hesitation, as you have to believe in yourself 100% on our large jumps. I had been struggling with this for years with my injuries until I started to address the problem with this team. Dr. Detling at HeadStrong walked me through numerous sessions and exercises that slowly increased this confidence. It is not something that will happen overnight, but with consistency and dedication, she helped me achieve this trust. Anyone looking to push their work, sport, or performance to the next level needs to train their brain just as much as we train our bodies. HeadStrong is an incredible team that can help you achieve your goals.

I came about HeadStrong during the 2019 World Para Archery Championships in the Netherlands. I had an idea of what my mental game and strategy “should” be, but had no clear way of making it come to life. Nicole was able to help me put together a plan that guided me through that first major tournament. After that, I had regular consults that helped cement a solid foundation in my mental performance. I finished the year with all 4 national records in my division, along with a world record. Through 2020 and the pandemic, HeadStrong has been there for me and helped me cope, develop and implement an even stronger mental program. I could write a million recommendations for you to give HeadStrong a try, but you won’t know the actual benefits until you set up a plan with them. Stop dreaming and start achieving with the help of HeadStrong!

I’ve been working with HeadStrong for about 6 months now. It has been beyond beneficial to my athletic performance within the 2 main sports I do. Our main focus was on ski jumping, and directly working on different ways to be at my best state of mind especially to that sport. I was then able to take what I learned with Nicole in regards to jumping, and used the same practices for my motorcycle racing. This is part of the reason why it has been so beneficial working with HeadStrong. Working on one sport was able to help me in another major sport in my life because the practices that I was taught, can work in a variety of situations and are not always just sport specific. My confidence levels at the beginning of the summer season were at an all time low. After working with HeadStrong over the last six months, I am now feeling more confident and mentally ready than I ever have before. I believe that pretty much all athletes can benefit from sport psychology because there are always things that one can work on to be at their top performance level. The mental side of sports can be what makes or breaks it in some cases. So, being best prepared and knowing how to train your mind to be ready for anything the sport may throw at you is very helpful. I would highly suggest any athlete who wants to push their performance levels to the top should work with HeadStrong.

I have been working with Nicole & Headstrong Consulting since 2014. When I started working with headstrong consulting, I was not sure if it would be for me after working with other sports psychologists and never understood what they were talking about. The one thing that Nicole did differently than all the rest was, she made it relatable to the situation when I would be in the high pressure situations and address them properly. Giving me tools to work with helped me get out of my head and become one of the top archers in the world. The experience came to light when I was in the high pressure situations and performed better than I ever could have thought. Headstrong changed the way that I competed and even the way that I look at my life. They understand that things happen but they guide you and equip you with the tools to overcome the obstacles, and move forward. If you are having trouble with your mental game I highly suggest you give them a call. They will give you a different way to look at high stress situations.

I started Working with Dr. Detling in 2015. It was clear from our first session that she was not there to try and “fix” me and that she didn’t come in with preconceived notions about me. Dr. Detling is genuine and real and I left more confident after just my first session. @headstrongdoc has a way of connecting on a raw and personal level that makes one feel secure. She is able to develop trust very quickly.

I have learned so many things working with Nicole including how to not be my own distraction, how to manage my emotions and my feelings when I’m competing, how to be comfortable in my own skin, tools and techniques that helped me maximize practices, and how to interpret chemical reactions during competition. My performance has increased and I have the scores to show it.

The thing that separates the top 10% of athletes in sports is their mental game. If you want to be a top dog, you have to master your mental game! HeadStrong can give you that edge. I truly believe that any athlete who is serious about competition should work with HeadStrong Consulting. Mental training is absolutely a necessity! I have no doubt that our dominance in sports would increase greatly if we focused more on mental training in the United States.

Dr. Detling is the best of the best and has impacted so many athletes in a positive way including me. I love her for that!

My name is Emma Rose Ravish, and I am on the USA Para Archery team. As a background, I started showing up to archery competitions with my recurve bow in 2019. Even though I was completely new to the sport, I somehow knew that it would change my life. Archery gave me a chance to feel semi-normal, sometimes to feel welcomed or accepted in a wheelchair is as simple as having a hobby for an outlet. Yes, I knew the sport would change my life for the better, but I didn’t realize how much the people would.

Nicole and I met in The Netherlands. The first competition with the team, my first international trip, and my second EVER competition. Yeah, you could say I was a bit of a mess! The only reason I could pull back my string and shoot that bow was because of two things. One being that the coaching staff was phenomenal, and the second was because Nicole listened to what I was struggling with. She talked with me about specific moments that were causing memories to come up, and gave different perspectives. She calmed me down many times.

Now, I could go on and on and on about all the different ways that Nicole has helped me, but I want to focus on this latest trip and how majorly she helped me. Going into a competition can be stressful, let’s be real! There’s a lot to factor in with competitions. One factor that i had never thought of, or realized before, was bringing issues from my personal life, into my professional life. On this latest trip, there were a few things I was worrying about that shouldn’t be worried about when competing. Nicole reminded me that the human mind is strong enough to focus on the task that needs to be done, while keeping any issues that aren’t prevalent in that moment at bay. A little help goes a long way. Perspectives are always useful. Nicole has taught me that pressure is not a threat, especially pressure that I worked so hard to earn.

Without Nicole, I wouldn’t have gotten a silver medal, or even made it to the semi-finals, or even had a strong enough mind to continue archery! Nicole is not just a part of the staff that goes to get arrows, she’s not just a bow case puller, she’s not just someone there to talk to, she’s not just a great friend, she’s not just a great listening ear, she gives a perspective that is well needed. Nicole is the difference between a semi-final and a gold/silver medal match, she makes the difference between feeling alone, and knowing that you’re supported. She has helped me through major issues, but Nicole doesn’t just talk you through an uphill battle, she stays by your side through it all.

Whether in sports or in music, a performance is a performance, and Dr. Nicole Detling’s presentation to my music students at UCLA was masterful! She provided specific strategies to “control the controllables,” and the students immediately felt empowered and more confident.

Gregory Goodall, Co-Area Head in Percussion at the Herb Alpert School Of music had to say about her presentation.

Doing mental training helped take my gymnastics career to the next level. After sustaining a major injury, Kristina (a mental training coach with HeadStrong Consulting) helped me keep my head in the game while I recovered and gave me the tools to make a quick return to the sport once I was healed. The skills I learned from my time working with Kristina helped ease the transition to NCAA and played a large role in the success I had as a college athlete.

I want to thank Stephanie Jones-Morin and HeadStrong for working with my team during the 2023-24 season. When I contacted HeadStrong, the high school Ice hockey team had a lackluster season. We were in 20th place out of 30 teams. Our record at the time was three wins and ten losses, and we led the league in undisciplined penalties with 303. As a coach, it was frustrating because the base of the group had played together successfully for four years and could not get it together. After dealing with HeadStrong and Josh Fischer in previous years, our coaching staff decided to reach out again. Josh had moved away but was able to put us in contact with Stephanie, who was fantastic. After a few sessions, she honed in on the problem, which was accountability. Our last session was before the playoffs; something clicked in these kids. They were so disciplined during the playoffs that our penalty minutes dropped; accountability soared through the roof. Our regular season record was 5-7-1, 21st place, and we constantly lost to weaker teams. In the playoff, we were giant killers and knocked off the 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 10th-place teams before running out of steam in the semi-finals. I highly recommend HeadStrong Consulting and will definitely be bringing them in next season to work with our team.

Thanks again,
