What is sport psychology?

To put it simply, sport psychology is mental training for enhancing sport performance. Many athletes work with coaches on their physical skills and abilities, but few also work on the psychological components of their sport. This is the focus of HeadStrong Consulting.

How much of your sport is physical vs. mental? Most athletes answer with the mental component being a larger percentage than the physical. However, how much do you practice the mental skills? Probably not nearly enough.

Have you ever gotten too nervous before a competition? Have you ever "choked"? Are you able to focus on the relevant cues for performance and block out the irrelevant cues? How confident are you in new or tough competitions? Do you perform your best every single competition? Learning to overcome these obstacles are only a few of the psychological skills you can learn by working with HeadStrong Consulting.

Who can benefit from sport psychology? EVERYONE! Regardless of age or level of sport, HeadStrong Consulting can help you train to be mentally tough; to achieve success on a consistent basis. At the elite level of sport, physical skills are very similar across competitors and teams. Nearly everyone trains their body in a similar manner according to accepted training principles. What separates the good athletes from the great athletes is the mental component. Learning mental skills will undoubtedly give you a competitive advantage.

Sport psychology is NOT about "fixing" the mind, but training it to more consistently achieve a state in which phenomenal accomplishments can occur. How long has it been since you've been in "The Zone"?
